Bloomberg has reported that Toyota will extend its massive 3.8 million vehicle recall for sudden acceleration problems to an additional 209,000 vehicles in Canada.

Nov. 27 (Bloomberg) — Toyota Motor Corp. extended a recall to Canada to fix accelerator pedals for 209,000 vehicles in the country, the Toronto Star reported.

The automaker will make changes to various Toyota and Lexus models as a result of a probe by Transport Canada, the newspaper said, citing company statements. Dealers will reconfigure the pedal for the 2007-10 Camry, Tundra and Lexus ES 350; 2005-10 Avalon and Tacoma; 2004-09 Prius and the 2006-10 IS250 and IS350. Toyota announced a recall of 4 million vehicles in the U.S. earlier this week.

Toyota ignored accelerator problems in its American vehicles for more than five years. Even after Toyota reluctantly acknowledge problems in Toyota vehicles shipped to the US, it continued to ignore Canadian concerns about the unintended acceleration defect.

All of us driving on American roads should be thankful that Toyota is finally trying to do something about this problem, but safety experts warn that Toyota is not doing enough.

However, safety expert Sean Kane said the recall doesn’t address hundreds of runaway Toyota cases he has uncovered where owners insist floor mats cannot be blamed. "What concerns me is that this recall still doesn’t get to the root cause of the non-floor mat sudden acceleration cases," said Kane, who heads the firm Safety Research & Strategies.

Safety experts have identified more than 2,100 sudden acceleration events in Toyota vehicles. Many of these sudden unintended acceleration occurrences involved vehicles without floor mats or involved vehicles not subject to the Toyota acceleration recall.

Toyota’s recall does nothing to protect the drivers of Toyota vehicles not recalled.

Until Toyota finally creates a solution that actually fixes the problem, all Toyota drivers must be prepared. You can learn how to stop your vehicle if it experiences the sudden acceleration problem at this post.
