There has been much written about the DePuy artificial hip recall concerning the DePuy ASR XL Acetabular and DePuy ASR Hip Resurfacing Systems. Safety advocates and others also anticipate a possible recall of the DePuy Pinnacle Acetabulum artificial hips as well. The DePuy Pinnacle replacement hip uses a metal-on-metal design similar that found in the recalled ASR Hip replacement systems. Growing numbers of complaints have prompted concerns with the Pinnacle System.
A number of complaints can be found in the comments to this post at Arthritis Today. There were at least 50 references to DePuy Pinnacle replacement hips. The Pinnacle System has not been recalled yet, but patients who are experiencing pain and other issues related to the DePuy Pinnacle implant should discuss with their doctor and an attorney immediately. According to DePuy, the Pinnacle Hip Solution was designed “to help provide a more fluid range of natural motion.” One study that the company’s web site cites from 2002 observed that an estimated 99.9 percent of Pinnacle Hip components remain in use, so a potential recall of this device would affect a significant number of people.

This is indeed a problem of probable greater scope and importance than the present MDL cases. We have filed the first lawsuit resulting from catastrophic injuries suffered as a result of the defective metal on metal DePuy Pinnacle implants. The injuries have been devestating. The Pinnacle was fast track FDA certified after DePuy acccurately claimed that it was substantially equivalent to the the defective ASR metal on metal FDA recalled predecessor. The defects and the resulting harm are certainly equivalent. Cornis v DePuy and J&J, 2:10-cv-02000, US District Court for the Western District of Washington. Filed December 10, 2010.
Anyone having problems with the Altrx model? I had a failure in 2009. I have a lab report that proves it was manufactured not to specs... e-mail me please...
I AM A PA OF 30 YEARS AND I SPENT 12 YEARS IN ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY. I HAD BILATERAL TOTAL HIP REPLACEMENTS 2003-2004. MY LEFT HIP DID WELL UNTIL 5 YEARS OUT WHEN I BEGAN TO HAVE GROIN PAIN, HOT TO TOUGH,STIFFNESS, LIMITED ROM, SNAPPING AND POPPING, FEVER, MENTAL FOG, COGNITIVE DYSFUNCTION, FEVER, CHILLS, DECREASED ACTIVITIES OF DAILY LIVING. THEN MY RIGHT HIP HURT FROM THE START. I AWAKENED TO IMMENSE PRESSURE AND PAIN AND IT CONTINUED FROM DAY ONE. SURGEON TREATED ME CONSERVATIVELY BUT TWO YEARS OUT THE PAIN WORSENEDTO THE POINT WHERE AT LEAST SIX TIMES DAILY I WOULD HAVE INTENSE, SHARP STABBING PAIN THROUGH THE GROIN TO THE POSTERIOR ASPECT OF THE BUTTOCKS.I FINALLY COULD NOT STAND IT ANY LONGER AND HAD IT REVISED. AFTER REVISION THE PAIN WAS GONE. AND FOR 2 MONTHS I WAS ON TOP OF THE WORLD, BUT THEN I HAD A 105 FEVER AND WAS DIAGNOSED WITH OSTEOMYELITIS OF THE RIGHT HIP. I HAVE HAD 3 SURGERIES THIS YEARALMOST LOST MY LIFE AS MY IMMUNE SYSTEM IS COMPLETELY WIPED OUT. TECHNICALLY IT WAS MAL-ALIGNED, YOU COULD SEE IT ON THE XRAY ESPECIALLY IN COMPARISON WITH THE LEFT HIP XRAYS. THEN METALLOSIS FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS WHICH ADVERSELY AFFECTED MY IMMUNE SYSTEM. BOTH CHROMIUM AND COBALT HAVE IMMUNOTOXIC AFFECTS ON THE BODY. I KNOW METAL ON METAL HAS LONG BEEN DEBATED AND EXPERIMENTED WITH. METALLOSIS INEVITABLY OCCURS AND WITH THAT KNOWLEDGE I WAS GIVEN A METAL ON METAL SYSTEM. TODAY THE PREFERRED SYSTEM IS A METAL ON POLYURETHANE CUP. I AM SO DISGUSTED ALL THE WAY AROUND AND I INTEND TO BECOME ACTIVE IN HELPING THOSE WHO HAVE HAD THIS UNFORTUNATE EVENT OF HAVING THIS UNTESTED DEVICES. BOTH J AND J AND THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAVE CULPABILITY IN THIS MANNER. JIM MORELAND PA-C, MHS
LISA, THERE ARE VARIOUS TYPES OF HIP SYSTEM. THERE ARE SO MANY, THAT EACH SURGEON CHOOSE THE ONE THAT HE IS COMFORTABLE WITH. I WOULD SAY YOU HAVE A LEGITIMATE LEGAL CLAIM NO MATTER THE PRODUCT. SEE AN ATTORNEY, READ ABOUT CERAMIC ON PLASTIC FAILURES AND DECIDE FOR YOURSELF. I BELIEVE DEPUY TRIED A FAST ONE BY BETTING OTHERS TO MARKET WITH THERE PINNACLE DESIGN. GOOD LUCK TO YOU.JIM MORELAND
